History
Department of Turkish Language and Literature
Vision and Academic Objectives
The fundamental mission of our department is to cultivate researchers who critically examine the historical stages and contemporary trends of Turkish Language and Literature through a holistic perspective. Our educational discipline aims to produce intellectually sophisticated individuals who master the literary canon, utilize the aesthetic and structural features of the language with proficiency, and strictly avoid arbitrary expressions or methodologically unfounded text production. In this context, our priority is to contribute qualified researchers to the world of science and culture by collaborating synchronously with national and international departments of Turkish Language and Literature.
Curriculum and Educational Structure
The first two years of the undergraduate program focus on Paleography (Ottoman Turkish) and Modern Turkish Language training, enabling students to penetrate the foundational texts of the early Ottoman literary tradition. The general framework of the program is designed to ensure that students comprehend the entire field of Turkish language and literature with analytical depth, while simultaneously internalizing distinguished examples of Western literature, modern linguistic methods, and techniques of literary analysis. Students are expected to enhance their literary sensitivity and gain the competence to interpret and evaluate Turkish literature through comparative methods and original academic perspectives.
Academic Opportunities and Career Prospects
Throughout the four-year undergraduate education, curricula are structured considering the most effective pedagogical learning methodologies. Our department offers Master’s and Ph.D. programs at the graduate level, providing graduates with the opportunity to pursue academic careers within the Institute of Social Sciences.
Graduates may serve as teachers in the Ministry of National Education or private educational institutions (within the scope of pedagogical formation); work as specialists in the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Turkish Language Association, and state archives; or take on roles in various content management units of TRT and other media organizations.
Research Infrastructure
For their scientific research, our students can utilize the rich collections and digital databases of the university's Main Library as well as the Vâhîd Paşa Provincial Public Library, which holds a deep-rooted heritage in the region.
